Cascais and its spectacular coastline are a must-see destination for any visitor to Portugal. Flanked on two sides by the Atlantic Ocean, the region is located just 25 km from Lisbon and its international airport, stretching west in a rectangle from Carcavelos to Guincho Beach. Nearby stands the imposing Cabo da Roca, mainland Europe’s most westerly point.
With its mild year-round climate, the Portuguese Riviera (as the region is sometimes known) offers a surprising variety of landscapes and attractions, combining a wide range of possibilities in one very unique destination. From pure leisure to business, golf, sun, sea and water sports, the Cascais Coast simply has it all and offers a new definition of the concepts of eco- and activity-based tourism.
TOP 5 reasons to visit the region
- Perfect mix of relaxation, sport and opportunities for business meetings.
- Excellent natural conditions and facilities for all types of sport, from the most extreme to the more traditional.
- 7 golf courses considered among the very best in Europe, all set in prime locations with the most modern facilities and infrastructure. Oitavos Dunes, the golf course where our final is going to take place, is considered the best golf course of Portugal, the second of Europe and the 65th worldwide (testimonial from GOLF Magazine´s 2013 Top 100 Courses in the World).
- It is rare to find, anywhere in the world, a natural park so close to a capital city. The Sintra Cascais Natural Park has managed to preserve everything in this westernmost part of Continental Europe.
- Cascais has it all for the lovers of luxury and designer style. The 5 star The Oitavos Hotel (combines ultra modern design with an untouched natural location within the the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park), among many others is the perfect choice for a romantic retreat inspired by the timeless beauty of the Atlantic coast.
It’s true to say that Cascais´ main strengths lie, fundamentally, in the rich combination of its natural characteristics, high-quality facilities, cultural diversity and professional services. In few words: One place with a thousand sensations!
Designed in 2001 by the renowned golf course architect, Arthur Hills, the Oitavos Dunes is considered one of the best golf courses at the moment.
Positioned in 65th place in the prestigious Top 100 by Golf Magazine 2013, it ranks number one in Portugal and number two in Europe.
The planning of the golf course involved the preservation of the delicate ecosystem of the dunes on which it sits. The Oitavos Dunes is the first golf course in Europe and second in the world to get the Gold Signature Sanctuary status, quality certificate awarded by Audubon International, in recognition of the highest level of conservation.
All 18 holes of this course offer stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra.
