James Bond is possibly the most charismatic character on the big screen. A total of six actors have played 007, portraying the glamor and luxury life of a secret agent. Its author, Ian Fleming, based James Bond on the double agent Dusan Popov, who liked to interact with the bourgeoisie of the time while visiting the village of Cascais during World War II.
Below, we take a deeper look at Cascais and what Fleming observed while also spending a lot of time there.
Built in 1930, the Palace Hotel is one of the most sophisticated and luxurious resorts of Cascais. Known as the “hotel of whispers” because the British and German spies stayed here during the Second World War. This is one of the hotels where the Spanish, Italian, French, Bulgarian and Romanian Royal families stayed while on holiday.
In February 2011, the hotel created the Royal Gallery where you can see many pictures and letters of Kings and European nobility who stayed at the hotel.
Artists, filmmakers, athletes, heads of state and government today choose this hotel to stay in. The hotel was also a filming location for the movie “007: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”

ENGLISH BAR – CIMAS RESTAURANT
This Bar is where the English spies gathered and where both Dusan Popov and Ian Fleming frequented. The bars location is a reminder of some of the 007 films. Today, Portuguese public figures like Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (Politician and Lawyer), Luís Noronha da Costa (Painter) and Miguel Sousa Tavares (Journalist), amongst others are the clientele of the recently renamed Cimas Restaurant.
Address: Av Sabóia, 9. Monte Cascais.

Cascais Promenade was a key area, as the encounters and clashes among the spies from both sides took place here. However, it has now become a peaceful and relaxing setting, embraced by the sea breeze, allowing you to discover the beauty of the beaches of Cascais.
On the promenade stands the Atlantic Hotel, the headquarters of German spies and that of Dusan Popov. The place has several secret passages leading to the sea if you had to evacuate.
Today, the hotel is closed and has been reinvented as a Hostel.
Address: Avenida Marginal, 8023 A. Cascais.
The Casino do Estoril inspired Fleming’s first novel and the 007 film ‘Casino Royale’. It is the largest casino in Europe and the greatest and most diversified entertainment and leisure complex in Portugal. It was also one of the locations in the filming of the 007 movie ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’.
Important to note: One of the evening activities at our 2015 World Final will take place here. The event is a tribute to one of the most important golf legends, Tony Jacklin. So don´t miss it!
