TONY JACKLIN SIGNS WITH WORLD CORPORATE GOLF CHALLENGE AS OFFICIAL GLOBAL AMBASSADOR

The World Corporate Golf Challenge is delighted to announce legendary golfer and Ryder Cup Captain Tony Jacklin has confirmed his support as the official global tournament ambassador.

The formal announcement was made earlier this month during the World Finals at Simola Golf Resort in South Africa. Mr Jacklin attended the World Finals for the week and said “I am delighted to be involved with the World Corporate Golf Challenge as the
global ambassador. It’s a great event for businesses to entertain customers and network with decision makers across a variety of industry sectors both domestically and globally. The event has a great heritage and I am excited about my role in helping to raise the profile of the event and to expanding the tournament into new territories around the world.”

In 1969 Tony became the first British player since Max Faulkner in 1951 to win the British Open at Royal Lytham. One year later, Tony achieved even greater heights when he became the first player since Ben Hogan to hold both the U.S. and British Open titles simultaneously upon his triumph at Hazeltine Golf Club, where he won by 7 clear strokes from his nearest rival, leading from start to finish in challenging weather conditions, leaving the greatest players of the day Tony Jacklin proceeded to attack everything else in life with the same enthusiasm that he had once committed to golf, but it wasn’t long before his passion was reignited. In 1983, Jacklin accepted the role of Ryder Captain, embarking on the next chapter of his golf career.

While Jacklin’s individual record is exemplary, he is perhaps better known for elevating and transforming the Ryder Cup to its current status. Jacklin set the wheels in motion to end the U.S. domination and nearly pulled off an improbable upset in 1983. Losing did not diminish the European team’s competitive spirit; rather it ignited an intense rivalry. In 1985, he was the inspirational non-playing captain for Europe’s first victory in the Ryder Cup in 28 years. The toothy grin on Jacklin’s face as he wrapped his arms around the trophy was almost as big as the Ryder Cup itself.

In 1987, he captained the team that won on American soil for the first time. Persuaded to do a fourth tour of duty in 1989, Jacklin’s team retained the Cup for the first time in its history. His infectious enthusiasm and indomitable spirit energized his team and lifted its confidence.

World Corporate Golf Challenge Chairman, Jose Guerra said “We are delighted Tony has agreed to support the tournament as our global ambassador, he is the ideal person for the role. His achievements and values both on and off the course mirror the event perfectly. As a player dedication and passion where fundamental to his success and as Ryder Cup Captain he insisted on everything being first class from the team uniforms to flying Concorde. These values are integral to the tournament and our ambition to deliver a world class event and a once in a lifetime experience.”

The World Corporate Golf Challenge is a team event and Tony Jacklin’s manager, Oliver Dury felt this was an important factor saying “Teamwork and companionship is essential in any business and these attributes are fundamental to the World Corporate Golf Challenge and key to Tony’s success as Ryder Cup Captain. We are delighted with the partnership and look forward to playing an integral part in growing the event in new countries across Europe, the US and Asia over the next couple of years.”
