Leaders are needed in business. They are the ones that make a company advance, that address the next steps to be taken, plan strategies and make decisions that lead to profit. There are many kinds of leaders, with different abilities to achieve good results.
What does it take to be a good leader? They say that it’s key to have followers that make you succeed, but there is no magic formula that works. What you can do to become a good leader is to learn from those who have excelled in golf, such as these:
Tiger burst into modern golf as the perfect player, a young player able to break records and achieve numerous victories, including 15 Majors. Some say that Tiger’s look at the 1st tee was challenging and powerful, making their opponents feel vulnerable just from the very beginning. There was a time when nobody could beat him when he was leading on Sunday, however well his rivals played. His game looked perfect at all levels, from tee to green.
As Tiger Woods grew up, it seemed as no other player could endanger his place as the best player of the world, although time showed that he had an enemy: himself. He forgot that he was human, not a machine, and that was what make him fall, with a private scandal and some injuries that have prevented him to train well and play at the pace he did when he was at his most successful stage.
Severiano Ballesteros, Seve, was a charismatic leader that shone on the golf course because of his courage and his ability to successfully emerge from the most unlikely places he was able to send the ball. He was capable of imagining impossible shots and execute them masterfully, transforming potential threats into great chances. So much so, that he managed to win 3 Majors, 50 tournaments in the European Tour and 9 in the PGA Tour, not to mention the six Ryder Cups wins, one as a captain in 1997.
He was admired all around the world, both inside and outside the course, not only because of his golfing skills, but also because of his personal attitude, rebelling against rules he considered unfair or absurd. This attitude was due to the difficulties that Ballesteros had to play golf because of his humble origins, and also made him promote public golf courses for everybody to play in. Seve’s best attribute was his ability to make dreams come true.
José María Olazábal
José María Olazábal, Chema, is an example of a serene leader. Quite remarkable are his skills as a player, but especially his ability to firmly face the most difficult moments in a tournament, like in the last holes of the Augusta National, winning The Masters twice. Olazábal was a leader that always respected other players and opponents, being his humility, courage and ability to sacrifice his best attributes.
To his personal achievements, we must add his great performance as the captain in the 2012 Ryder Cup, where he excelled as a leader, guiding the European players to a victory that seemed almost unreachable several times during the tournament. Everybody in the team was unanimous about Chema’s ability to team up, build confidence and make every player feel important, even those who had played fewer games.
Being a leader is not easy. There is something needed that not everybody is able to identify and achieve. Each company requires different skills, so therefore, those who are able to identify the key aspects of leadership are the ones that will be respected and followed by those that need guidance.
Golf has historically provided many great leaders. Those mentioned are only a small part of a long list. Which golf leader would you prefer to be more like?
